At the final indoor track meet of the winter season at Thomas Jefferson Community Center, in Arlington, Virginia, Sunday, February 9, two racewalkers, two young men, two young women, and one veteran athlete provided the fireworks.

    More than 420 athletes young and old attended, making it the biggest all-comers meet ever held at TJ.  Events included racewalks of 1600 meters and 3200 meters and runs of one mile, 3000 meters (1.86 miles), 55 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, and 800 meters, plus 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays.

    Two 3200-meter racewalkers dueled in the meet's first event.  Steve Pecinovsky, 48, of Woodbridge VA, narrowly outraced Alex Major, 31, of Baltimore MD, 13:46.1 to 13:48.3.   Five young women tackled the 1600-meter racewalk, with Alesha Cain, 11, of Hyattsville, barely stepping past Candice Kilgore, 14, of Takoma Park MD, 9:31.0 to 9:31.4

    In the children's mile, Michael Burnett, 12, of Washington DC, raced stride-for-stride with Kyle Graves, 10, of Silver Spring MD, before taking the lead in the last lap to win by less than one second in 5:52.  Ashley Sinclair, 13, of Silver Spring MD, was the first female in the race, finishing 3rd in 6:07.  Seeing the two young men racing got the crowd to its feet cheering.

    A few minutes later, Sinclair raced her twin sister Halsey in the women's mile.  Halsey won in 5:28.5, a half-lap ahead of Ashley's 5:48.5.

    Veteran athlete Ted Poulos, 41, of McLean VA, won both the open mile and the masters' mile.  In the open mile, Poulos's 5:29.3 put him two seconds up on Ethan White, 12, of Hyattsville MD, 2nd in 5:31.6, with Terry McLaughlin, 42, of Spotsylvania VA, 3rd in 5:35.4.

    Ten minutes later, Poulos prevailed again in the masters' mile, running 5:18.1, ahead of McLaughlin's 5:21.1.  Three Arlington VA runners finished 3rd, 4th, and 5th -- Steve Easley, 45, in 5:30.1;  Patrick Garner, 45, in 5:34.0;  and Jay Jacob Wind, 53, in 5:35.4.

    Between those races, Gregory Holden, 23, of Falls Church VA, won the elite mile in 4:51.4, just ahead of C. W. Moran, 18, of Sterling VA, 2nd in  4:53.0, with Welch Suggs, 30, of Washington DC, 3rd in 5:04.3.

    In the 3000 meter, Peter Silverman, 18, of Washington DC, took the lead from the start and held off Poulos, 10:05.9 to 10:11.1.  Nathaniel McVey-Finney, 34, of Silver Spring MD, was 3rd in 10:12.5.  First among women was Velda Kannewulf, 40, of Mechanicsville MD, 7th overall in 10:51.0, just ahead of Jay Wind, 8th in 10:54.5.

    Honest Tea provided refreshments for the meet, conducted by D.C. Road Runners Club and Potomac Valley Track Club in co-operation with Arlington Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Resources.  Volunteers included Mireille Baril, Clarissa Dudley, Brian Freeman, Steve Easley,  Miranda Gant, John Haubert, Nancy Davis-Imhof, Sandy Lovelace, Tommy Lovelace, Alex Major, Bob Parrillo, Elmer Powell, E. Robert Premo, Don Riggs, James Scarborough, Penelope Sinclair, Darrell Tucker, and meet director Jay Wind.
