Message to our Cranberry Crawl entrants:

Thank you for entering PVTC's 2017 Cranberry Crawl on Saturday, November 18, 2017, starting and finishing at Carderock Recreation Area on C&O Canal Towpath near Potomac MD.

  • Date: Saturday, November 18, 2017 - Cranberry Crawl 5K run or race walk (7:50 AM) & 10K run (no 10K race walk) (8:00 AM)

Directions:

Carderock Recreation Area does NOT have a GPS address, sorry about that.

From Georgetown, take M Street westbound.  Cross Foxhall Road.  M Street becomes Canal Road.  Pass Chain Bridge.  Canal Road become Clara Barton Parkway.  Go 5 miles more west.  Pass under I-495 Capital Beltway overpass.  Go one mile west. Exit right onto ramp labeled "Carderock Nav Surf War Cen."  At top of ramp, turn left, cross over both lanes of Clara Barton Parkway, bear right at "Carderock" sign, and go through tunnel under C&O Canal Towpath.  Immediately after the tunnel, look to your left for a gravel path.  That path takes you to the start line.  Now continue by car to the t-intersection.  Turn left for 75 parking spaces, or turn slight right for 60 parking spaces and toilets, or continue right to 50 parking spaces, or continue all the way right to 120 parking spaces and toilets.  Return to the main entrance road and walk up the gravel path to the start line.

Pick up your bib number at the start line, not at any of the parking areas or the pavilion.  Please bring your own safety pins, as we often run short.  Maybe even bring extra safety pins to donate to our box.

If you must change your distance (and thus your start time), please enter your bib number, your name, and your change at the registration table on the CHANGE CHART when you pick up your bib number.

We conduct our races on Saturday in memory of Peter Blank, PVTC's treasurer, who died on November 7.

When you pick up your bib number, please sign the big card or glossy paper in Peter Blank's memory.  We present that card to Peter's family at his memorial service on Saturday, Dcember 9, at 11:00 AM at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Rd, Fairfax VA 22032.  If you knew Peter -- who ran all our races till he got sick -- or even if you didn't, please join us to celebrate the memory of our dear friend Peter.

COURSE NOTES

You start at the top of the gravel path leading from the tunnel under C&O Canal up to the Towpath.  You take a slight right turn at the very beginning.

The 5K course is 2500 meters out'n'back once, eastbound then westbound, so when you get back to the top of the gravel path, you turn left for 45 feet (15 years, about 14 meters) to the finish line.  Don't sprint those last 45 yards -- they are downhill, and we don't want anyone to fall.

The 10K course is the first 5000 meters as above, but the 10K midpoint is on the Towpath straight ahead of the start / finish. Stay right of the refreshments table at the 10K midpoint, then turn left to circle the table and head back eastbound for another tour of the course.  As above, when you return to Carderock, bear left to go down the gravel path to the finish line, but for safety, don't sprint the last 45 feet to the finish.

We have a refreshments table with water and Gatorade at the start / finish, the 2500-meter turnaround near Lock 10, and the 10K midpoint back at Carderock.

This is the fourth race of PVTC's annual five-race Ed Barron Championship series.
