Thank you for joining Potomac Valley Track Club's Young Flyers youth track & field program!
Remember to set your clock back one hour between Saturday night and Sunday morning. That change means your young athletes will have a 25-hour day. Some will spend the extra hour trick-or-treating. I plan to spend the extra hour sleeping, since New York City Marathon is on November 1.
Alas, I'll be out of town this weekend for that little run ending in Central Park. Our other coaches will take the lead -- Coaches Jane Greenberg and Andrzej Sakaluk (a Marine Corps Marathon finisher last Sunday!) at the check-in desk, also for middle distance and hurdles, Coach Art Klein for the warm-up, then the race walk, assisted by Coaches Albert Arcand and Barbara Goodman, Coaches James Darr and Betsy Peace for breaking the big group into smaller clusters, then for long distance and beginning sprint, Coaches Mark Jordan and Joan Syers for advanced sprint, Coaches Jim Shellington and Jennifer Stephens for throws, and Coach Abdelillah Razah for relays and general shepherding.
This weekend's refreshments will be provided by
As of this week, we are sponsored by Clif Bars, and I'll have four dozen Clif Bars in my magic red van., which Coach Andrzej or Coach James will pick up at my house around 2:30 PM on Sunday afternoon.
We expect to have the t-shirts next Sunday, November 8, so if you live near Springfield VA, please let me know if you can pick them up at printer Bobby Briggs's house off Greeley Boulevard.
Starting next week, we begin the push to get young athletes registered for our free track meets on Sundays, January 10, January 24, and February 7 at TJ Center. See www.pvtc.org/indoor
The athletes can test their skills at the various distances and field events at our practice meet on Sunday, December 13.
Beginning November 8, I shall coach parents to use Time Machine electronic timer and check charts for athletic performances.
I want to invite parents and friends to Safety And Health Foundation's first aid / AED / CPR certification class on Thursday, November 5, 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, at Walter Reed Community Center. I serve as director of SHF, and we are proud to use the proceeds of our marathons to subsidize first aid / AED /CPR training to cost just $25 (instead of $125). See www.SafetyAndHealthFoundation.org/#firstaid to register for the class. The class 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM is already sold out, so SHF added a second class.
Some of the parents enjoy running five-kilometer races. I shall direct Veteran's Day 5K on Saturday, November 7, at 11:00 AM on the Mount Vernon Trail in Rosslyn, 1201 Lee Highway, Arlington VA. To register, see www.SafetyAndHealthFoundation.org/veterans
PVTC conducts 5K and 10K Cranberry Crawl on Saturday, November 21, at 7:50 AM and 8:00 AM at East Potomac Park, 972 Ohio Drive SW, Washington DC. To register, see www.pvtc.org/welcome#crawl
