TO HOST 2009 USA MASTERS INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
WITH WORLD RECORD HOLDERS AND OLYMPIANS,
VOTED TODAY BY USATF NATIONAL CONVENTION

(HONOLULU, HI) -- Potomac Valley Track Club (PVA) won the bid to host the 2009 USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships, in a vote taken today at USA Track & Field's national convention in Honolulu HI, according to Bob Weiner of Accokeek MD, who organized the bid and also serves as National Masters Track Media Chair.

The national championship meet will be held at Prince George's Sports and Learning Center in Landover MD, Friday-Sunday, March 20-22, 2009, directed by PVTC with the guidance and partnership of USATF's Potomac Valley Association (PVA), who supported PVTC's bid.

The meet will draw more than 700 competitors and is open to all athletes 30 and up. "We've even had athletes over 100 years old, like Everett Hosack," said Weiner. "We expect numerous world record holders and past Olympians." In recent years, competitors included Frank Shorter, Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit Samuelson, and Sullivan Award finalist Philippa Raschker. Olympic Gold Medalist hurdler Allen Johnson, 36, a graduate of Lake Braddock High School in Burke VA, told Weiner Friday that he would like to run the locally-based 2009 Indoor Track & Field Championships as his first masters meet.

The national championship meet was held in Boston 11 of the past 12 years,

The host hotels will be the Radisson and Holiday Inn Express in Largo MD.

This event supports the spirit of competitive excellence developing in the region and showcases the Greater Washington area as a marquee sporting destination," said Bob Sweeney, president of Greater Washington Sports Alliance.
